YOUTH SUMMER SAILING
Sailing Program For Children
Ages 6-14 Years Old
July 1 - August 30, 2024
After many years of organizing sailing classes with friends children, home school groups, and the youth at R.I.S.E., here at Sail Rockaway we are excited to announce our dedicated youth sailing program.
|
The goal of YOUTH SUMMER SAILING is to connect our future generations to the water by teaching them sailing. Through the practice of sailing, children can develop the skills and confidence necessary for great journeys down the line. Every day will be an adventure as we set off to explore the local waters while learning and having fun.

YOUTH SUMMER SAILING
SAILING + SWIMMING + SHORESIDE
SAILING + SWIMMING + SHORESIDE
SAILING
Our flagship vessel, the Norfolk Oyster, is the main sailboat for starting off, but as children’s confidence and skills increase they will upgrade to sailing their own Optimist dinghy. We will also will use our Catalina 14 for youngsters that want to take their skills a step further.
All lessons begin shoreside with a short classroom session where we prepare for the days activities. Once we get under sail, children get to practice on both tiller and sheets, working together as a team. Our instructors will guide the young sailors with proven sailing school techniques mixed with fun activities while on the water. We cover the basics: boating safety, right of way, tacking, gybing, points of sail, knots, rigging, docking, navigation, winds, tides, man overboard, and anchoring. |
Regattas (races), boat based scavenger hunts, sponge tag, and sea shanties are a but a few of our nautical based extracurricular activities.
SWIMMING
On the hotter days we cool off with some swimming in the bay. There's a few different options for beating the heat: we can swim from off the boat, or beach the boats at a park and swim from the beach, or practice capsizing and learning to "right" an optimist dinghy. Most fun of all is the floating foam island; an 8'x6' soft foam swim mat that we tow out to Dubos point.
~While swimming is optional, the ability to swim on a basic level is required; not only for safety's sake but for peace of mind. |
SHORESIDE
We are fortunate to have several public parks within a stones throw from our dock, all accessible by boat. On occasion we will aim to sail to some of these shoreside parks and have some fun on the land.
Between the sandy expanse of Dubos Point Wildlife Sanctuary to the manicured fields and nature trails of Bayswater Point State Park and Bayswater Park, we have plenty of interesting places to chart a course to.
|
Shoreside fun will include: nature walks flora and fauna identification capture the flag tug of war with prizes and more! |
