technique and water safety.
We fully extend the breadth of our knowledge to making sure you develop the necessary skills and mindset for sailing on your own. Our devoted sailing instructors will attentively guide you to becoming a proficient sailor on boats under 20 feet. A broad range of relevant topics are discussed both shoreside and on the water.
We are able to tap into the type of learner that you are; physical and mental, and make sure you get what you need to confidently enter the exhilarating realm of sailing.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
How to safely operate sailboats of 20 feet or less in near-coastal waters under moderate conditions. You will practice on both the Norfolk Oyster 17 and the Catalina 14.2 sailboats. We prepare you to sail on your own using our Catalina 14, which we allow students of this course to return and use for FREE!

Practice sails must be completed with fellow classmates, Sail Rockaway personnel, or an experienced sailor of your choice within 5 weeks after successfully completing the course; while your newfound skills are still fresh.

Officially document your sea time
After the course is complete, we provide you with the USCG Small Vessel Sea Service Form and sign off on your record of days sailing with us. This can be used as documented proof of your time spent sailing.

DAY 1
9:30am Shoreside: Discuss your goals. Intro to rigging and points of sail on an "optimist" dinghy while on land 10:00am Dock: Water Safety Rigging Overview with knots Cast off from Dock Hoist Sails 10:30am Sailing Practice on Norfolk Oyster: Students take turns on Tiller and Sheets while focusing on Wind Direction and Sail Trim and various Points of Sail More topics are discussed during practice SUCH AS: Nautical Terminology Right of way Tides and Currents Aids to navigation Lee shores 12:00pm Return to dock: Docking procedure Lower Sails 12-12:30pm Lunch break 12:30pm Short classroom with knots and charts 1:15pm More sailing practice and discussion 3:30pm Dock Boat Lower sails |
DAY 2
Similar to day one. Practice, practice! Additionally we cover beach landings, man overboard drill and anchoring. Afternoon of day 2 we sail the Catalina 14 and purposely capsize the boat to learn the correct way to safely right the boat. Prepare to get wet! |
