We start all lessons on our
Norfolk Oyster 17 sailboat
and progress to
Optimist dinghies.
The Optimists or "optis" for short, are the largest class of sailboats for youth sailing in the world. Most great sailors got their start on the tiny 7 feet 9 inch long optimist. These boats are ideal for kids 6 to 15 years old.

It's the perfect size sailboat for children since most of the rigging is simplified and easy enough for a child to handle the boat.

We utilize proven optimist sailing techniques to foster efficient learning for kids while having fun. All of our instructors got their start on optis and know how rewarding it is to sail these classic little boats.

Our immediate body of water where we learn to sail is the largely enclosed Somerville (Basin) Cove, with very low boat traffic and soft shorelines making it very safe.
One of the first lessons we perform is learning to right a capsized optimist. From that point on, most children's fears have been abolished and they can focus on technique and fun.
