Advanced I
  • Advanced level sailing calls for us to delve a bit deeper. While on the dock we will learn how to make fast a "reef" in the sails; a tactic used to deal with strong winds. Furthermore, we will learn how to shake out the reef while undersail.
  • We will also cover the technique of "heeving-to". This is a useful technique to stop the boat dead in its tracks while under-sail, which in effect relieves the skipper while the boat sails itself.
  • Before casting off we will set up the rigging and plan how to best get underway whether motor or sail.
  • Choosing a unique destination, proper heading, sail trim, right-of-way, and when to tack are all factors that will be discussed and acted upon as we make way on the bay.

Advanced II
  • Students can take the opportunity to sail the boat on their own while instructor lends assistance on the water via motorboat.
  • Student practices and refines techniques from previous lessons during their solo sail. Under instructor supervision, student may attempt to successfully cast off from the dock, sail around the basin and safely return to the dock on their own.
  • Anchoring Techniques will be discussed and practiced.
  • A plan for docking is discusssed and executed.
